Put Down Your Fire.

Well here I go breaking my political tone and heavy duty talk rule again. I guess sometimes something so horrific can allow for a pass. Sunday’s tragic shooting in Las Vegas left anyone with a pulse trying to comprehend this while consumed by heartbreak and helplessness. I fear that we are getting to a point when learning of these tragedies that our reactions become “where and when was it” instead of what it should be— “how could this happen?”.

These actions leave me stunned, disgusted, scared and frankly pissed. Yet I still ask- how could this happen? AGAIN. Who are these people?  What is their motivation and how are they able to achieve such insanity?

I wasn’t going to write about gun control for a few reasons- well for a lot of reasons, but mainly because- well, I’ve been fighting for a few “causes” over the last few years and the frustration of not being heard can drive a girl nutty. And can lead to some ruffled feathers that I’m too tired to bat down.

Then I received two comments from readers who *asked* me to write something. Anything. And I gotta tell you- I was beyond touched. Not because this forum is going to make a difference in the grand scheme, but because it reminded me that one voice does matter. Many voices at once or just one voice many times can make an impact. (I mean, I just left a blip of a PTO meeting where one parent’s request caused some eye rolls around the table, but honestly, if that request gets brought up again throughout the year, it will move to a “we have had many requests to explore this so now it is being reviewed for change” category– and that puts the wheels of change in motion, my friends. I’ve seen it before in the smallest ways. And have obviously been unlucky in others too— Oh how I wish those damn trees could get planted on our Truman Parkway to give it the beauty and life it deserves. More trees, less used mattresses and litter. One day…. pipe dreams.)

More importantly, gun control is beyond serious and something I feel like is reaching its tipping point for resolution. It is a confusing topic for me because I grew up in a house pretty peppered with guns. Beautiful vintage shotguns and rifles mounted above our fireplace in locked cases, and some hand guns safely out of the way here and there. My grandparents, avid hunters.  My great aunt, whose house I frequented, had her shotgun exposed in the corner of her bedroom resting upon her daintily needle-pointed doorstopper (had to make sure those squirrels didn’t get the bird feed!). And I was surrounded by my nearest and dearest family and friends who were and are land-lovers and devoted—and notably, responsible– hunters. Me personally? I have hunted in my life, but the bug never stuck with me. I enjoy shooting a gun at a non-breathing target, though it doesn’t mean I have to own one.  A sad reality is that respectful sportsmen shouldn’t have to give this hunting sport up (it helps in a lot of ways to control animal overpopulation, etc., I’m told), but I have to say, and many of my closest will disagree with me, –in the world we are living in now, something has to change and this is that something. I’ve had things taken from me in my life that I didn’t want to lose either. If people want to fight to the death on keeping these firearms around, I’m going to need a better excuse. The approval process on permits for these weapons is paper thin. Literally and figuratively. (I’m thinking (praying) Automatics/Assault rifles are a little tougher to obtain.)

I used to train at a boxing gym (and my husband still does) with an incredible professional fighter, Steven Bass at Savannah Combat Club. The coolest thing about Steven, a tough scrappy white boy from Alabama is that he wants to see change in the community for at risk youths. Yes, he coached me and others of my make and model, but his focus is on teaching these young boys and girls how to use self-defense. Vote “organically grown guns” (on your arms), not manufactured. (All while keeping them physically fit!)

At his gym, that literally has chains hanging from the ceiling holding old tires as equipment (so hard core), he has two significant tears in the leather mats on the floors. I asked him one day what caused those tears, and he told me. He said they were both ricochet damage from a bullet flying through the window two summers ago. At lunch time. On a Wednesday. Next to a 10 year-old boy doing sit ups on the mat. It was a misfire from a gang fight in the street. Not far from where many of my friends live and their children go to school. A close call (still causing mental distress to the child) that didn’t have to happen at all.

The point? I don’t know if gun control is the solution for what happened in Las Vegas– and goodness forbid all of the other places that explosively come to mind that have suffered in this same way. It seems to me that if a possessed individual has his sights set on doing harm, he will find a way do it. Traditional weapon or not. But maybe it would be wise to make this far more difficult for them.

Having to think about these things on a regular basis has become a cruel fact of life. But we can’t stop attending concerts and classes and football games and traveling to see loved ones. I remember how impressed I was (am) by Americans moving forward so quickly after 9-11. All abiding by the rule to not let this stop us from embracing our lives, enjoying day to day activities and not living in total fear. Dark cautions still enter our minds on occasions– I know, I’m guilty of it too. But the action of being stronger than these cowards is more important.

I can’t offer any answers, only comfort in that you are not alone in what you are feeling. One shooting was too many. Where we are now is unconscionable. What’s next? And by that I don’t mean in a helpless way, I mean, what’s next for us to do to help? My thought?…..

But it’s time for more of us to say we shoot guns, we own guns, we are around guns BUT we still want it harder to obtain those guns. We don’t want those guns to be automatic or semi automatic. We want common sense gun laws. It’s time for us to talk, write, post, and scream. Xo
