The Grammar-ist, oooh the flopsy, flopsy…

In case you are anything like me, and kinda “wing” things and hope no one notices–  song lyrics, urban terms, directions, emoji use (like is the “tear face” emoji tears of laughter or excruciating pain? I use it interchangeably, and sometimes even in the same text. I gotta tell you– it gets confusing.) …I recently discovered clarity on two words I have been abusing and misusing for over a decade. I would like to formally apologize to all of those on the receiving end of texts, notes or posts where these have been used. As some of you know, I take decent pride in my knowledge of grammar  (even when I fudge it (insert over-use of the “dot, dot, dot”, “the comma” or “dash, dash”).

This is embarrassing, but here goes…

**Yeah is casual form of yes. No celebration indicated. Yea is an affirmative vote. Consider it a little more “formal” than “yeah”.  Yay, a homophone of yea, indicates joy, enthusiasm or happiness.**

I’m probably still going to misuse these, as I just don’t love “yay”, but I’ll work on it. yay.

  1. I am loving your blog. You’re the cutest thing ever. And I totally agree – it drives me totally insane when people put yeah when they mean yay. But yay is fine – why do you have a problem using it? Also, on your very first blog post that I read, the first word was misspelled… ;) dot dot dot My sister-in-law is a blogger. Check her out.
