Trivia Tuesday: NEWSworthy.
I’ve long been a fan of good ol’ fashioned trivia—and board games for that matter. I love anything that gets those synapses firing. I can use all the help I can get these days.
I am not on Twitter, but have been catching the buzzings around the subject what, in fact, the letters NEWS stand for. Now, I am personally invested in this, as this has FOR YEARS been my go-to “bar trick” or “aaah” cocktail noteworthy trivia to enlighten my cronies. Turns out, while not alone, I have been wrong. For like 18 years! I blame the miniature trivia book I was given at a holiday gift swap many moons ago. The trivia nuggets were in print, so they were true, right? WRONG. Turns out what I was regurgitating from that read, was that NEWS is an acronym for North, East, West, South. It made sense, reporting relevant stories from all over the map. Cool, right? I liked this tidbit because it made you think…..huh…I didn’t even know it was an acronym in the first place. Maybe other words are as well that I use on the reg and I never even knew it. (Like when people try to say that “RAP” stands for Rhythm And Poetry. That was also ‘proven’ false….but I like it. Maybe it can just stand for that to me?)
Anyway, NEWS has gone from standing for the directions, to “Notable Events, Weather and Sports”, “National Editorial Weekly Service” to now it looks like verified as just a plural of what is new. I’d say borrrrrring. I gotta go find a new party trick. In the meantime, let me know if you happen to find out if this is actually true. It seems the debate continues, which is kinda silly, but people are getting real fired up about it. The scoop will be all neeeeews.to.me.
