The Moon.

I’m the kind of person that believes in everything. An optimist at heart. Everyone and everything deserves its fair shot. From Big Foot to ghosts to the spirit of St. Nick, and you can bet your underpants I believe in the lunar cycle and its effect on the human psyche.

I don’t think that makes me a flake; I think it makes me open-minded or perhaps “thoughtful”? Maybe? ;) Besides, as a grief psychologist once responded to me when I asked if she believed that the dead became spirits/ghosts that visited us on Earth, she casually thought for a moment and said, “I have no reason to believe that it’s not true, so why not?” And she’s a professional, so, that’s hopeful.

The moon’s cycle and its alleged effect on every living organism is kind of like the spirit world or horoscope astrology—sure there have been numerous studies to suggest these things are a little “hocus pocus” or nothing but fluff, but there have been enough pro age-old reports and stories and TOO many “coincidences” to count in their favor for me to discount their effect. ( ‘les not forget I’m the person who had a Medium tell me I was pregnant, and I found out the NEXT DAY that I actually was. In addition, I just learned so much by having my family’s chart reading this month. More to come on that. In the meantime, just believe! ;)

So– A few months ago I kept noticing how unexplainably wiped out I felt and I was tired of just blaming it on mom stuff, etc. I became curious if maybe there was something else at play. I was “diagnosed” with Adrenal Burn-out by a naturopath, which was interesting (and honestly validating) to me, but hard to explain to my husband who only buys that you’re sick if you’re hooked up to 92 IVs in a hospital bed in a coma. Was getting no sympathy here ;) It’s cool though.

I also noticed I was sleeping so randomly well on some nights and others not at all. One day in the carpool line I cruuuuuised into some very intriguing info about the moon and sleep cycles. It’s a lot of info (and mostly back and forth on what’s proven), but to me there is no denying that it affects our sleep patterns and daily behaviors. Thus, I started a little quick-jotted moon calendar diary for myself. Just noting things like “slept ok; wanted to sucker punch the chick at the post office” or “great sleep; husband must have too; both whistling doo-dah today”, etc. In reviewing the last few months of my little journal, it is eerily in sync with the moon’s 29.5 day cycle. The farmers were (and are) on to something when they followed those cycles for planting. It’s real, people! Once the full moon has been reached (and you can sleep again), and the waning moon takes charge, that’s when farmers weed and prune- and you may notice a need to clean out that junk drawer or get tidy. Maybe it has more of an effect on some than others, though police rap sheets grow longer around full moons and hospital baby roll-call lists are longer too. All three of my kiddos made their appearances on a full moon. Again, coincidence? hmmm.

Not many peeps have the time (or interest!) to record in a moon diary; I get it. It has, however, become an informative way for me to get a grip on why or how I fluctuate throughout the cycle — in more ways than just sleep. Maybe it could help predict when NOT to tackle complex projects, etc. (As if we have the luxury of making a schedule that dodges heavy moon dates. Wishful thinking;).

I continue the search for an app that is simplified enough for rookie moon-howlers like myself, though perhaps with this moon reference you can at least try blaming it on something besides yourself the next time you start barking at the politicians on television. And remember, you’re likely not alone! Lunar-tics unite!
